Make yourself look good by pointing out everyone else's faults

I am not a political creature and don't even vote because I am a New Zealander living in Australia. But I need to make a political statement of my own tonight.

There is an election this weekend so we are subjected to political advertisements on TV. What strikes me is that instead of concentrating on the benefits of the party or their policies, all the ads do is undermine the opponent. They tell us why we shouldn't vote for the other bloke because he is incompetent, bad or just plain evil.

I've heard of dirty politics but it doesn't make sense to me. I don't respect anyone who has to point out everyone else's faults to make themselves look good. It is immature, impolite and disrespectful.

So luckily I don't have to vote for any of you (idiots). But if I did, I would be tempted to ask "what are the actual policies that I am endorsing with my vote". Strangely, none of the ads actually tell me who's going to do what.

My old fashioned values have led me to believe that our leaders and representatives should be role models. But the behaviour of Australian politicians and their smear campaigns makes me understand why society finds it acceptable to put other people down. In my world, that's just bad manners. If you lived in my house, you would get a clip around the ear for behaviour like that!

Here endeth the rant!

  1. I agree 100%. It isn't any better here in America either. By the time our next presidental election rolls around, I'll be gagging everytime I see an ad because I'll be so sick of it all.
