Breakfast ~ Yay or Nay???

I've been thinking about breakfast lately.

Since I left home up to 4 months into my healthy life change, I never ate breakfast [whoa that's about 22 years!]. Everything I read told me I should eat it, so I started.

Last week, I carbed up on Sunday and didn't feel hungry on Monday so I skipped breakfast. I felt so much better without it, and didn't really feel hungry until about 1pm. With brekkie, I am hungry around 11am and just hold out until I can eat at noon.

It is not what I eat [I always have 2 or 3 eggs with butter and cottage or cream cheese - low carb] and I have tried more/less eggs, more/less fat, more/less protein and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

My question is ~ are there some of us who do better without breakfast? Will my metabolism meltdown completely and refuse to function for the rest of the day if I go too long without food? Will I suddenly become ravenously hungry in the evening and inhale 4x my body weight it simple carbohydrates?

Or is eating when I am not especially hungry a bad idea? Any thoughts?

  1. Katie I think it depends.

Morning after a refeed, nah I don't think it matters, I never wanted to eat for most of the day after a refeed.

Otherwise I think it depends, for me I think breakfast is important. I actually spent most of my life not eating breakfast or lunch, I was hungry but I just ignored it. Reason why was because I didn't eat breads or cereals, didn't like them so I refused to eat them (this was even since I was a kid).

Now I was always slim for most of that time but I had low muscle tone and big boobs so I still had plenty of bodyfat, I was just a skinny fat.

When I look back, I was always having problems with light headiness(passed out at a friends house once), always getting colds which always turned into bronchitis and sinus infections etc

I still catch colds easy but I can't remember the last time I had bronchitis or a sinus infection, its been years.

I also now don't binge on family blocks of chocolate etc so for me I think it helps. When I skip, particulary if often I start eating crap.

Another thought is maybe something your having for breaky isn't agreeing with you?

  2. 1st - sorry we didn't get to see you in Sydney, I was the only one who wanted to go to the Opera House, so was out voted! We were far too busy shopping truth be told!
2nd - I never ever eat breakfast, unless I'm on holiday. I cannot exercise with food in me belly, and I simply don't feel hungry till about 12 noon. It has worked for me, and I still lost weight, so my belief is, WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU.

Hey K!! I think that this is an individual thing to be honest... i have a book called "I can make you thin" by a UK hypnotist whos theory is "only eat when you are hungry"... and I lost loads of weight by applying that theory a few years ago and still do it to this day.... it is the thinking of naturally thin people.... I'll bring the book along when we meet up!
I have gone a few days over the past few weeks without breakkie and like you, feel better for it!

The reason you get hungry when you've eaten breakfast is eating got your metabolism going so you burned the food you ate and need more.
When you don't eat breakfast your metabolism isn't running as fast.
